I was struggling quite a bit with the Wi-Fi on the TiBook. Then for some reason I rebuilt Debian and had a chance to start over.
And I found this post which recommends editing /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf - well in fact on my system, which I believe is Debian 6.0.7 (Squeeze?) I had to edit /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf - and another thing to mention is that after setting managed to True, restarting the network manager and networking didn't do it. I needed to reboot and then all was well.
